One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is the importance of focusing on what I want, not on what I don’t want.

Human beings seem to be hard-wired to focus on negative experiences, a phenomenon known as negativity bias. Some researchers estimate that negative emotions have as much as 3xs the impact as positive ones!

What most of us don’t seem to realize is how much this drains us of our vitality, and how it keeps us stuck in our circumstances.

Whatever you focus on expands in your mind.  Think about that for a moment.

The more you think about how much you hate your job, the more you find yourself hating it.

The more you think about the clutter in your house, the more the clutter appears to be taking over.

The more you think about how overwhelmed you are, the deeper into overwhelm your sink.

Instead of focusing on what you don’t want, practice focusing on what you DO want instead.

Instead of thinking about the clutter, focus your attention on the spaces that are clear and clutter-free (even if it’s only a tiny corner of your desk!)

Instead of thinking about how much you hate your job, think about the one or two things that you like about it (even if it’s just the paycheck or the free coffee in the break room.)

Keep doing this and you will find it becomes easier and easier to turn your mind in the direction you want it to go.

And, if you turn your mind in the direction you want it to go, you WILL turn your life in that direction as well.
